I have a confession to make.

I play Fortnite.

A lot.

It’s fun, accessible, and most importantly, free. Well sort of.

Because of this, an estimated 250 million players around the world, including myself, were devastated when the game went completely black recently.

You might have heard about Fortnite’s “Blackout” that happened last weekend where Fortnite creator “Epic Games” shut the game down for about 3 full days, making it impossible to play for the first time since it’s launch in 2017. In place of the game, an animation(warning: loud video) depicting a black hole greeted players when they logged in.

That was it.

There was no way to pass this animation screen, no way to play the game, and no way to chat with online friends over this 3 day period. You would think that this would drive players to take a break from the game, right?

However, it had the exact opposite effect. Views and mentions related to Fortnite jumped to the highest they have been in the last year. In fact, the publication Quartz reports that views jumped to 4 million over the period, the highest they’ve been in about a year.
